Utility Pipe Repair Robot

pipe repair robot

The Welding and Inspection Steam Operations Robot (WISOR) was developed as a prototype for Con Edison of New York as a means of remotely inspecting and repairing subterranean steam pipes. WISOR uses an inch-worming motion to move through straight pipes up to 200 ft away from the operator. A fully functioning WISOR would be linked to the surface via a power and communications tether and repair pipes from the inside, avoiding the disturbance and expense of a dig at the maintenance site.

  • Remote inspection. WISOR's five cameras give the operator a clear picture of the infrastructure and a visual confirmation of any repairs.
  • On-the-spot repair. Equipped with an on-board milling device and MIG welder, WISOR can prep and reseal a leaky flange with a 360° structural weld.
