Heat Flow Probe
Measuring subsurface heat flow is essential to increase our understanding of lunar and planetary geophysics. Regolith thermal gradient and conductivity reveals a wealth of knowledge about a planetary body: its radiogenic isotopes, the thermal history, and the mechanical properties of the interior.
Honeybee has significant experience in developing heat flow probes for lunar and planetary sciences, deployable from a small platform. Our heat flow probe design provides effective penetration through regolith while maintaining a low volume, mass and power profile. And by avoiding the use of downhole or percussive actuators for deployment, the Honeybee heat flow probe injects almost no heat into the regolith, enabling accurate measurements of the natural thermal landscape.
