Robotic Endoscopic Laser Scalpel
Working with partners at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Honeybee is supporting development of an endoscopic laser scalpel system for a variety of surgical applications. The device provides a steering and focusing system for incision, excision and ablation of tissue in minimal access surgery.
The concept of a “laser scalpel” has existed for a long time, but controlling the laser’s path and intensity has been a challenge. Honeybee is working on embedded systems for the robotic surgical device to enable precise, accurate control of the laser using a computer-based input. Surgeons viewing a section of tissue can direct the cuts through an input display, with the robotic system making a seamless translation for the path and intensity of the laser. This new minimally invasive surgery technique has numerous applications where the traditional cold steel approach is not ideal.
